Louie Pereira is a musician, composer, arranger, and educator from South Texas. He is a graduate of the School of Music at Texas State University, receiving his Bachelor’s in Music Education with Jazz Certification in 2016. In his time there, he was a member of the Wind Symphony, the Symphony Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble, the Bobcat Marching Band, the Latin Ensemble Salsa Del Rio, and various other percussion ensembles and jazz combos.
Throughout that time, he received various accolades and awards – two being, the winner of the 2013 Texas State Concerto Competition, performing Emmanuel Sejourne’s Vibraphone Concerto, as well as receiving the Woods Kone Endowed Music Scholarship in 2014, with his performance of John Thrower’s True Colours on marimba. He has studied with performance master Bobby Lopez, as well as the world-renowned Count Basie drummer Butch Miles, and University of Texas - Austin Drum Set Professor Wayne Salzmann II.
He was also a member of the Austin-based New Orleans style brass band, the Boss Street Brass Band, whose second album, Put It On You, that he recorded with them on drum set, was nominated by the Texas Music Educators Association Committee, and resulted in two invitations for live performances at the TMEA Convention in 2018 and 2019.
Louie’s WGI marching experience includes Texas State University Indoor Percussion (2012), Imperial Percussion Theater (2013), and Teatro Indoor Percussion (2014). While living in Texas, he worked with programs such as Dripping Springs HS, Reagan HS, Sandra Day O’Connor HS, Floresville HS, and Harlingen HS. He was also the Percussion Director/Jazz Ensemble Director at Roosevelt High School (2017) and Frenship High School (2018, 2019), with Frenship Indoor Percussion receiving the Gold Medal in 2019 in the CCGC Circuit’s A Class. Finally, he was a founding staff member of Violet Crown Indoor Percussion, a WGI Independent Open Class Finalist. He is currently on Music Staff with POW Percussion, a WGI Independent World Class Finalist Group, as well as the DCI Open Class Finalist and 2022 Silver Medalist, Gold Drum and Bugle Corp.
He is a recent graduate of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, receiving his Masters of Music in Jazz Studies. At USC, he was a Teaching Assistant and under the tutelage of two-time Grammy-Award winning fusion drummer Peter Erskine, Will Kennedy, Aaron Serfaty and Roy McCurdy. He is currently teaching at both the Pasadena and Monrovia Music Academies, the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra, and Drumming For All.
